Activities and Fiestas in La Cala

The Three Kings
The three Kings festival on January 6th / 7th is favourite with the children. This is when Christmas gifts are given and opened - there are street processions with the three kings on floats throwing sweets for the children to catch.

Patron Saints Day
January is the month of San Anton - the Patron Saint of Mijas. This is a particularly colourful festival when carriages and carts full to overflowing with flowers and food are carried to the hermitage. This culminates in an open air party and general celebration. The streets are lined with stalls plying locally made bread and the general arts and crafts for which the area is famous.

Andalucia Day

The 28th of February is Andalucia day and throughout this Fiesta the village streets are decorated with bunting and the village becomes a mass of green and white - the colours of Andalucia. Children wear masks and there is dancing and parties in the streets. The mood of fiesta runs throughout the whole month of February.

Easter

The Easter week processions compete with one another in luxury and splendour. The parades leave each of the town´s churches to wind slowly around the streets, with their lifelike statues of Christ on the Cross and his mother the Virgin Mary in mourning. The processions are organised by the religious brotherhoods, representing guilds of tradesmen or other groups. They spend all year long preparing the elaborate costumes and decorations.

San Isidro

15th May. San Isidro is the patron saint of the farmers, and many villages celebrate his day with a procession through the fields and a fiesta, as well as agricultural trade shows.

Festival of San Juan
Saint John´s feast - San Juan - is held on the night of the 24th of June, and is celebrated on Andalucia´s beaches - along the entire coastline with bonfires and fireworks. There is an Andalucian tradition to dip your feet in the sea just after midnight.

La Virgen del Carmen
La Virgen del Mar (Virgin of the Sea) is the patron saint of Almería. La Virgen del Carmen is the protectress of seamen, and at the end of day on July 16th the towns and fishing villages of the coast parade their statues of her by the water, and set sail in gaily adorned boats, accompanied by the blowing of horns and bursts of fireworks in the night sky.

La Cala Fiesta

Every Summer La Cala hosts a 'feria' or fiesta on the wasteland where the weekly markets are held. It is during the second fortnight in July. The entire town takes part in this carnival. Some businesses even close down so as not to miss out on any of the action. The fun fair runs till early hours of the morning. The lights and the buzzing atmosphere attract many visitors. There are many food stalls and places to partake of alcoholic beverages and an entertainments tent where Spanish celebrities entertain the thousands of revellers until the early hours of the morning.

Marbella - this luxurious town seems to have it all and is becoming a favourite location with the rich and famous, as well as more ordinary folk, who are willing to pay just a little bit extra for southern Spain's answer to St Tropez. But Marbella has a down to earth side too, which can be best appreciated by exploring back streets in the old part of town. One of the prettiest places is the famous 'Orange Square', which is located just off the main street in the older district. The narrow streets where homes, restaurants and shops intermingle to create the atmosphere of a small village, rather than a cosmopolitan town. Only 20 minutes away from the Villas.

If you’re looking for nightlife then Puerto Banus with its wide choice of alfresco bars, piano clubs and discos is the place to visit. However, during the day this is a window shopper’s dream with several of the worlds renowned fashions houses featured here, in addition to small, interesting shops and boutiques.

You can pass many hours wandering along the long promenade along the coast stopping at the many bars and cafés.
